Vale SA May Bid For Mosaic - Let the Great Potash War Begin (MOS, POT, VALE)

Bloomberg reports today that a Brazilian newspaper has hinted at a pending $25b bid by mining giant Vale S.A. (VALE) for The Mosaic Company (MOS), the world’s largest phoshate producer and #2 potash producer. This follows up on earlier reports that Australian miner BHP Billiton was interested in snapping up North American potash assets. Mosaic [...]

The Not-Ready-For-Primetime Stock List

Several readers have asked me what particular stocks are on my radar these days.
The list is actually quite long, but unfortunately it’s chock full of companies that just don’t seem to grasp their own potential. But since I’m currently giving away my best ideas for free, I have no problem presenting a list of my [...]

Potash Corp (NYSE: POT) Slashes Q2 Earnings Est; Group Holding Up Surprisingly Well

Potash Corp of Saskatchewan Inc (NYSE: POT) issued a major cut to 2nd quarter earnings estimates yesterday, now calling for just $.70/share from earlier guidance of $1.10-$1.50.  While this is certainly disappointing for investors in the entire space, shares of Potash Corp. are impressively holding their own today, currently down just 2% after falling nearly [...]

Exiting Schering Plough, Looking at Going Global

In line with yesterday’s post on some pending changes to the Secular Trends Model Portfolio, I am blowing out the remaining 1850 shares of Schering-Plough in the model. SGP has really just been a floater since the announcement of Merck’s buyout in early March, which initially valued Schering shares at $23.60 in cash and stock.
Since [...]

Potash Corp. to Cut Production 20 Percent; Will Pricing Be Preserved? (POT)

Potash Corp. came out late yesterday and joined the likes of Mosaic (MOS) and Uralkali in cutting production of its chief product, as they will reduce 2009 potash output by roughly 20%, beginning in January.
CEO Bill Doyle sees demand as only temporarily weak, noting a slowdown in the availability of credit and a general “wait [...]

A Critical Day Approaches for Commodities; A Look at Wheat, Aluminum, Copper (AA, FCX, POT)

In addition to the disappointing close in the U.S. equity markets yesterday, there was also a renewed breakdown in the prices of many commodities. Due to their leverage as catalysts to Potash Corp (POT), Alcoa (AA), and Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), I’m focusing in on wheat, aluminum, and copper.

Mosaic Pre-Announces Results Through 11/30; Further Production Cuts Coming (MOS, POT)

Mosaic Company (MOS) took the opportunity to dump the kitchen sink on an already dreary day. After seeing shares fall 16% in Monday’s trading session, the phosphate and potash producer pre-announced volumes for its Fiscal Q209, ending November 30th.
Noting the “unprecedented global economic and credit downturn”, Mosaic reported phosphate volumes of just 1.3 million tonnes, [...]
