Market Research and the Secular Trends Portfolio

Our equity analysis originates within a methodical, objective, and analytical framework. But true success involves equal parts science and art - and this begins with a solid belief in the way the world will be in the future. From that belief comes a basic construct of market dynamics, which then promote logical theories that resonate with specific technologies and businesses.

Failures -while certainly the enemy - should be appreciated as much as successes, so long as the investor can approach both with a relative calm. Success in the long run is the only goal which truly matters, so we must practice with intent, no matter what the short-term noise reinforces…or contradicts.

The zen archer or “kyudo” mythology embodies the idea of perfect practice, and perfect practice is our aim. Perfect practice is attempting, measuring, making mistakes, learning from them, and iterating better models and strategies. To this end, fundamental analysis is the linchpin of the investment philosophy. Qualitative models and macroeconomic analysis are incorporated to create an allocation framework, and technical analysis is in the toolkit but not a driver of investment decisions.

The markets are always seeking their inherent balance, and our investing style seeks to comprehend the markets and profit from imbalances when they appear. The Secular Trends Portfolio, an all-equity model that is presented on this site, is our attempt to profit from the most likely beneficiaries of global trends with a long shelf life; 10 years is a good starting point for an investment thesis here.

Epiphany Investing’s Secular Trends Portfolio page can be found here, and thesis positions can be accessed from the main page Tag Cloud. The comprehensive ledger, which shows all exact purchase dates and cost basis metrics, can be viewed from the main sidebar, or right here.

Whether you invest with the help of my words or in spite of them, best of luck in your efforts.
