Hunting Down Some Alpha - 398 Basis Points This Week
The Secular Trends Portfolio is finally gathering up some alpha (nearly 4 full percentage points this week), and I couldn’t be more thankful after some early knife-diving purchases into names like Alcoa (AA), Peabody (BTU), and Petrobras (BTU). Volatility has been more extreme than I ever could have imagined, and sectors like industrials and basic [...]
Electronic Arts (ERTS) Down Big on Guidance; Good Value Here
Video game publisher Electronic Arts just hasn’t been able to find its stride ever since the new game console units came out two years ago. They discounted the marketability of the Wii, leaving R&D woefully behind for the social phenomenon.
And their heralded franchise games (that flat-out print money every year) have failed to make up [...]
GFI Group (GFIG) Reports Loss in Murphy’s Law Quarter
Investors weren’t expecting much in the way of good news as inter-dealer broker GFI Group reported earnings after the bell Thursday. Shares are down 80% YTD and over 60% in the past month, as several of the company’s core markets - OTC derivatives trading - experienced massively lower volumes, and many industry watchers wonder if [...]
Auto Parts Retailers Outperform, O’Reilly Reports Earnings (ORLY, AZO)
While the auto industry propells itself into the abyss, the parts retailers like AutoZone (AZO) and O’Reilly Automotive (ORLY) are seeing their value proposition become more relevant in the marketplace. From the outset of the month, Potash Corp. (POT) joined the agriculture, energy, and materials stocks on a gyrating ride, consistently twice as volatile (or more) as the overall market. And that’s really saying something considering the VIX has been tailgating in the $50-plus range for the whole of the month.
Investors who simply like the [...]
MGM Reports Earnings, Las Vegas Sands Finally Pops (LVS, MGM)
The gaming stocks are all up big today, as MGM reported earnings that were (expectedly) horrible but boosted by high-end customers at the Bellagio and Macau properties. MGM shares were up over 35% mid-day, but the real winner has been Las Vegas Sands by proxy; LVS shares are up over 90%.
Somebody big has been accumulating [...]
Corning Earnings up 24%, But Consumer Weakness on the Horizon
Flat-Panel maker and glass guru Corning (GLW) reported earnings up strongly year-over-year, but notched down guidance for the 4th quarter. Shares are down over 9% in early trading, as the sales forecasts came in lower than even reduced estimates.
Boilerplate Numbers
Net income for the 3rd quarter was $768 million, up 24% YoY from $617 million. Sales [...]
